The first ascent of the Giant Mountains highest mountain is dated to 1456. It was accomplished by an unknown Venetian businessman, supposedly a precious stone prospector. In the period after 1681, when the St. Laurel chapel on Sněžka was consecrated, there were regular religious processions to this mountain – today we would say that this was the first precursor of future tourism.

Real “tourist” Giant Mountains were born only due to the romantic interest of city dwellers in the 2nd half of the 19th century. This resulted in a sudden change in the economic life.

Former farm buildings (chalets in the mountains) were reconstructed for year-round use and as tourist facilities. Later there were also built new accommodation and restaurant facilities.

The trend in “discovering” the Giant Mountains peaked at the end of the 19th century and then during the existence of the first Czechoslovak republic. Temporary decrease in the course of the World War II and shortly after 1945 was replaced by a fast development of large-scale tourism under the cover of the Union movement.

The present times, marked by a construction boom in mountain resorts, offer huge amounts of free-time activities but also possible hazards related to ill-considered interventions into the nature of the Giant Mountains.
